The African Culture & Learning Center works to enhance, promote, and improve the self-reliance, dignity, and self-respect to Maine’s diverse communities. It provides outreach to refugees and their families, information and referral to community resources, health promotion and connection to health services—including mental health services and lead poisoning prevention. The Center also provides educational programming, which includes tutoring children in their native language, teaching the Somali language to foreign students, and native literacy. Additional services include referral to vocational training and employment opportunities, presentations on cultural and faith issues, and interpretation and translation in Arabic, Somali and Swahili.
