The Maine Human Rights Commission enforces the Maine​ ​Human Rights Act (MHRA), which provides that ​people in the State​ ​of Maine ​who are in a class protected by the MHRA (e.g., race/color, sex/gender, national origin/ancestry, sexual orientation/gender identity and expression, physical or mental disability, religion) have a right to be free of discrimination ​because of their protected class status/membership ​in​ ​employment, housing, education, public accommodations and ​extension of ​credit. The​ ​MHRA also provides that it is unlawful to interfere with, or retaliate​ ​against, a person’s assertion of rights protected under the MHRA.​ The Commission also enforces the Maine Whistleblowers’ Protection Act through the MHRA.​
