The Maine Human Rights Commission enforces the Maine Human Rights Act (MHRA), which provides that people in the State of Maine who are in a class protected by the MHRA (e.g., race/color, sex/gender, national origin/ancestry, sexual orientation/gender identity and expression, physical or mental disability, religion) have a right to be free of discrimination because of their protected class status/membership in employment, housing, education, public accommodations and extension of credit. The MHRA also provides that it is unlawful to interfere with, or retaliate against, a person’s assertion of rights protected under the MHRA. The Commission also enforces the Maine Whistleblowers’ Protection Act through the MHRA.
