Going For It
Going For It: an experimental/amateur talent show is an ongoing participatory performance and an exercise in bravery and community care. The event fosters a communal exchange rather than a typical performance dynamic by holding up both performer and audience as equal participants. Expertise is not necessary, and is perhaps even discouraged! Feel free to play the one song you know on guitar, lead the group in song for the first time, teach a skill, show and tell, or anything else that feels a little brave! The idea is to exercise your bravery muscles, and that might look big or small depending on who you are! And you get to decide that for yourself. For some people, being brave might just look like showing up.
This event is being hosted by Devon Kelley-Yurdin (they/them), an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and cultural organizer based in Portland, Maine. Devon started this project in 2017, guided by the belief that the changes that need to occur to create a more just and equitable world are going to require bravery, creativity, collective joy, radical vulnerability, and community support. Going For It is a way to bring this skill-building together in a playful way that can then be brought out into the world! More info can be found at: www.devonkelley-yurdin.com/goingforit
Organizations participants will have an opportunity to connect with at the event:
Planned Parenthood
Maine-Wabanaki REACH
Maine Access Point
Mindful Queer Collective
Pine Tree Youth Organizing
Resources for Organizing and Social Change

COST TO ATTEND:
We ask people to pay 0-$100 for each day of the YAG. All are welcome no matter what you are able to pay. If you and your family don’t have a lot of money, feel free to pay on the lower end or pay nothing. If you and your family have more money, please consider paying more and taking part in class solidarity.
What is class solidarity?
Class refers to where you and your family fit into the world regarding finances (for example: poor, working class, middle class, wealthy). The YAG is put together on a shoestring budget so we can make sure it is accessible to all. If you and your family are people who can pay more for you to go to the YAG so others can pay less, please consider doing so. If you do so, you will be taking an action of solidarity and making the YAG more accessible for people who cannot afford to pay much.
We understand that not all families are supportive of activism and not all people have conventional families they can rely on. If this applies to you, don’t sweat it. Leave the family out of it and come join us!
No matter what you pay for the YAG, there is no judgment. Pay what you can but most importantly come!
