The Martin Luther King Jr. Fellows (Fellows) is a Youth-Led group with the mission to advance racial equity and social justice in the Greater Portland area. Based on the philosophy and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Fellows are dedicated to the elimination of all forms of oppression and structural racism that is historically rooted in our social, political, educational and economic systems.

GOALS

The overall goals of the group include:

• Identify and/or create opportunities for civic, school and community engagement

• Strengthen and increase the participation of youth of color in the development and implementation of policies and practices that impact the quality of their lives

• Provide on-going opportunities to support academic success, training and skill-development

• Engage in community/school service

• Develop safe spaces and opportunities for creative expression and innovation

• Build connections to youth of color impacted by the justice system to address issues related to the school-to-prison pipeline

• Develop an appropriate peer-to-peer component

• Provide exposure to the diverse history and experiences of people of color in Maine
