Mainers for Fair Wages is a campaign to put a citizens initiative on the 2016 ballot to increase the minimum wage. This campaign was put together by a coalition made up of the Maine People’s Alliance, the Maine Small Business Coalition and Maine AFL-CIO. The initiative would:
-Increase the minimum wage to $9 an hour in 2017 and then by $1 a year until it reaches $12 by 2020.
-After 2020, the minimum wage would increase at the same rate as the cost of living.
-The subminimum wage for tipped workers (currently $3.75 an hour) would be increased to $5 an hour in 2017 and then raised incrementally until it matches the minimum wage for all other workers by 2024.
Raising the minimum wage will directly help more than 150,000 Mainers, boost Maine’s economy and benefit local communities and small businesses. It’s the right thing to do. Maine people have waited long enough.
